Infosys lays off 240 freshers. How to build a good career in such environments.

  • Infosys has let go of 240 freshers who were unable to clear the internal ‘Generic Foundation Training Programme’, even after multiple reassessment attempts, mock tests, and doubt-clearing sessions.

  • The impacted trainees, hired as System Engineers and Digital Specialist Engineers, were given three opportunities to meet the required performance standards.

  • As a gesture of support, Infosys offered an alternative career path, including company-sponsored BPM (Business Process Management) training and outplacement services.

  • Additional support measures provided include:
    • One month’s salary as ex-gratia
    • A formal relieving letter
    • Access to 12-week BPM or 24-week IT Fundamentals training via NIIT/UpGrad
    • Counselling support and assistance with accommodation

  • Upon completing the suggested training, affected candidates may reapply to Infosys BPM.

  • A similar decision earlier in February 2024 led to over 300 trainees being released, prompting appeals to the Prime Minister’s Office.

  • With the IT industry witnessing slow revenue growth (0–3%), companies are adopting stricter training and performance criteria.

  • Despite this, Infosys plans to hire 20,000+ freshers in FY26, reinforcing the message that competence and continuous upskilling are now non-negotiable in the evolving tech landscape.

Preparation Tips for Students

  • Start Early (Ideally in the Pre-final Year):
    • Strengthen your core technical foundation—master programming languages (Python, Java, SQL), data structures, and algorithms.
    • Sharpen problem-solving skills through regular practice on platforms like LeetCode, HackerRank, and CodeChef.
    • Contribute to open-source, GitHub, Kaggle, or live projects to demonstrate practical application.

  • Gain Industry Exposure:
    • Pursue internships during summer/winter breaks in relevant domains like software, AI, or embedded systems.
    • Engage in freelance or part-time roles to gain early professional experience.

  • Build Soft Skills & Aptitude:
    • Focus on communication, teamwork, and analytical reasoning.
    • Prepare for common aptitude tests (e.g., AMCAT, Cocubes) using structured resources.

  • Stay Current with Industry Trends:
    • Explore emerging tech areas (AI, Cloud, Cybersecurity) through MOOCs on Coursera, edX, etc.
    • Attend webinars, hackathons, tech meets, and build a professional network.

  • Mock Assessments & Mentorship:
    • Take company-specific mock assessments (Infosys, TCS, Wipro) to understand hiring formats.
    • Seek guidance from alumni or seniors to refine your preparation strategy.

Why Internships Matter

Internships serve as a vital bridge between academic knowledge and industry requirements, offering exposure to real-world challenges. They help students:
✔ Build both technical and soft skills aligned with corporate expectations
✔ Establish a professional network that can lead to future opportunities
✔ Enhance overall employability and confidence
✔ Understand various career paths through hands-on experience
✔ Increase the chance of receiving a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO)
For STEM students, internships in tech companies, startups, or research environments are essential for gaining a competitive edge in an increasingly demanding job market.
